[Resort View Aug 2024] Flying the Singapore Flag High: Our Youth Bowlers Bring Pride to our Nation

Our NSRCC Youth Bowlers did well in recent bowling events and made Singapore proud! We talked to Ashley Victoria Lok, Hazel Tan Wei Ning and Edric Lim Xian Jin who did amazingly well in different competitions in June. Learn more about their trainings and future plans here!

Ashley has been part of NSRCC’s Youth Bowling Team since 2021 and trains regularly at the Club and in other locations. She practices with various experts at NSRCC, her CCA and her National Coach. Her dedication paid off when she won Gold in Girls Masters (Singles) and Silver in Girls Team (Team of Four) at the 23rd Asian Junior Bowling Championship 2024 on Jun 22.

“Participating in bowling events (in NSRCC) such as the Quarterly Medals have helped me refine my competitive edge, on top of my weekly practices,” says Ashley. What’s next for this rising star? She will be bowling at the MWA Thai Open in August and the National Youth Championship in November.

Hazel has been with the NSRCC’s Youth Bowling Team since she was a Primary 3 student back in 2017. She finds training at NSRCC and joining the Club’s bowling events helpful in building her experience in competing. “Since young I would train with the other youth bowlers who were much older and more experienced than myself. Bowling with my seniors has allowed me to gain a lot of insight from them based on their experiences. This helped me a lot in terms of improving my game.”

Hazel recently won the Runner-Up position under the Girls Masters (Singles), as well as Silver in the Girls Doubles and Bronze in the Girls Team (Team of Four) during the 23rd Asian Junior Bowling Championship 2024. She continues to train hard at the Club and school, and plans to make the National Squad to represent Singapore in more major games and competitions.

Hazel, who joined the Asian Junior Bowling Championship 2024, won three medals in total.

Edric has been a Youth Bowler at NSRCC since 2018. “I try my best to go to the weekly trainings at NSRCC, which helps me better myself as the coaches put us through drills like sparing practice or mini games to improve our shot accuracy.” Edric also regularly joins NSRCC’s Quarterly Bowling Medals, using these events as a way to challenge himself, sharpen his 8-game series and work on picking up easy spares. “If I can hit those goals, I consider it a good event and any prizes that I may win is a nice bonus.”

These practice sessions have helped him hone his skills. During the Master Finals of the 54th Singapore International Open in June, Edric bagged the Championship title in the Under 18 category. Shortly after the Singapore International Open, Edric also did well at the Sarawak International Open, where he won 2nd Runner up in both the Classified Division and Youth Boys Division.

Edric has exciting plans ahead. “Currently, I am training hard for NSRCC’s Quarterly Medals and Annual Bowling Championship. I am also training for the Singapore National Youth Championship and 50th Penang Pesta at the end of the year. I hope to be able to join the NDS (National Development Squad) as well.”
