Learning & Earning: Resort View Feb 2024 RV

You have probably seen a few fresh young faces serving members at NSRCC. Did you know that some of these enthusiastic young ladies are, or had been, part of the Work-Study Diploma (WSDip) Programme offered by the Institute of Technical Education (ITE)? NSRCC is in partnership with ITE to provide opportunities to jumpstart these students’ careers here while pursuing their Diplomas. Meet Michelle and Sharifah!

Michelle needed to make an important decision about her next milestone after completing her Higher Nitec Certificate. Upon scrolling through the various possible options to pursue, she stumbled upon the the WSDip programme from her school newsletters. From there, Michelle decided that this was the pathway for her.

Attracted by the fun and lively environment that NSRCC provides, Michelle opted to be employed by the Club and has never looked back since. As a non-golfer with no initial experience with the sport, Michelle learnt the ropes from the very beginning, giving credit to her superior who guided and motivated her during the journey. Now, she can confidently share knowledge about the Rules of Golf, common golf etiquette and how golf events are handled.

Michelle who now holds a Diploma in Lifestyle and Recreation Management, has been working with NSRCC for the past four years and was even promoted to Assistant Executive in 2023 and has plans to climb the ladder towards a management position in the next few years. “With NSRCC, and the growth potential available, I hope to eventually lead a talented team as an employee in a senior position and mentor fresh aspirants on a fulfilling career journey, just like my own.”

What makes her so passionate about this career? The people. Not only her colleagues here but also the members that she meets and serves. “Members of NSRCC are all very friendly and understanding which is why they are part of the reason that made my working experience here an enjoyable one.”

Currently a student under the WSDip programme, Sharifah might be the youngest staff here. A recommendation from a senior was what led her to this education path. Nevertheless, this programme is not for the average teenager whose week is usually filled with just classes and hangout sessions with friends. Sharifah meticulously plans her hours accordingly to accommodate her work schedule, school and time with family and friends. It may not be the easiest, but she takes it all in her stride.

Just like Michelle, Sharifah had to start from scratch in the world of Golf. Having no prior experience in customer service, she also found it a challenge at first to interact with members and guests. However, the initial jitters soon disappeared with the encouragement and patience of her colleagues who helped increase her self-confidence and deepen her knowledge in the field. Nowadays, Sharifah is more confident in taking on new challenges, knowing that she will “get a head start on work experiences, making it easier to adapt to the working lifestyle in future.”

Ultimately, she finds working at NSRCC to be a thrilling endeavour, appreciating the knowledge gained thus far. She owes it to her mentors, Michelle and Kevin, who have been guiding her and providing feedback for improvement. With the experience gained, the future looks bright for Sharifah who hopes to expand on her learning and knowledge, aiming to enrol into a university as her next step.

Wish Sharifah the best as she works towards her ITE graduation in 2025, and give Michelle a thumbs up the next time you meet her!
